Brian L. Young | CEO & Principal
After 28 years in the insurance business, Brian L. Young co-founded BD Capital Partners, an acquisitions and mergers firm designed to assist independent insurance agencies through the transition of selling their business.
Brian has a unique combination of claims, agency, corporate, and field executive experience. With his strong background in market analysis, business development and expansion, and agency acquisition and growth models, he has developed marketing and sales systems that have been adopted by the country’s largest multiple-line insurance companies and independent agencies. To BD Capital, he brings his belief in taking a human approach to acquisition; it’s why he is one of the most trusted people in the industry.
Brian got his start in the insurance world as a Claims Adjuster. His talent for coaching people toward success is what made him stand out early in his career as an Agency Manager, and it’s what has kept him in this business for so many years. Always interested in people and what makes them tick, he majored in sociology at University of Findlay, where he received his Bachelor's degree. He also attended University of Virginia, Darden Business School. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the University of Findlay, and he has been selected for admission to Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.
Bob Nienaber | President & Principal
Bob has the responsibility of heading up one of the most prolific cloud-based service providers in the executive benefits business, benefitRFP, Inc. The organization is comprised of top recognized experts who are dedicated to benefit clients and industry partners. The team has the experience of working with 1000’s of non-qualified executive benefit plans ranging from not for profit organizations through large privately held companies as well as Fortune 100 clients. benefitRFP’s team has the unique experience of working on both national and international corporate executive benefit plans. In addition to his role at benefitRFP, Bob serves on the boards for Sunshine Maker’s, Inc/Simple Green, Nature’s Renewables and is an Ambassador for the American Association of Life Underwriter (AALU) Executive Benefits Committee as well as the Board of Directors Advisory Counsel for ExecRank, Inc. Through AALU’s Impact Committee, he works with members of the Congressional Senate Finance Committee on issues affecting corporate executive benefit plans.
Prior to co-founding benefitRFP, Inc and co-creating benefitMATRIX™ and recently merging firms with BD Capital and benefitMATRIX™, Bob has had the opportunity to assist in creating the platforms and sales operations for Guardian, Principal Financial Group and Phoenix Companies of America and has directly consulted with many of the leading benefit-provider firms. Bob also assists product manufacturers with product and investment designs to help improve their efforts in providing advisors and clients with the competitive and comprehensive product platforms available.

Bob lives in Northern California with his wife of 26 years and recently saw his daughter off to her new IT job in Prague. David Hollenbaugh | COO & Principal
Dave Hollenbaugh, co-founder of BD Capital, has been in the business of building insurance agencies for more than 27 years. In addition to leading sales teams with one of the largest multiple line insurance companies in the world, he worked with and owned part of a Top 100 Independent insurance agency in the U.S.
In his career, Dave has had the chance to build strong relationships with both national and regional insurance companies across the United States. He served on several insurance companies’ agency and executive councils.
Dave earned his Bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance from Ohio Wesleyan University. He attended the Darden Business School and later he earned his Charter Leadership Fellow designation from The American College. In addition to being a standout in the business world, Dave was inducted into the Ohio Wesleyan University Hall of Fame, where he was a part of many winning teams.
Steffen Nass, CHFC | VP of Digital Innovation
Steffen currently serves as the architect behind Nations Choice technology innovations. He was the co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of benefitRFP.
Born and raised in Germany, he has an intrinsic need to improve efficiencies of process and quality of output. This quest for progress led him to become the visionary architect of the cutting edge benefitMATRIX™ technology.
Fifteen years of experience as an innovation leader in the executive benefits field has guided him to develop an engaging client experience when analyzing and designing executive benefit platforms using his benefitDIAGNOSTIC™, planBUILDER™, and benefitCONCIERGE™ technology solutions.
The benefitMATRIX™ algorithms empower him to foster deep relationships with leading insurance carriers, investment product providers, and third party administrators. The algorithms allow stakeholders to construct intertwined executive compensation and benefit plans that result in positive developments for executives and the organizations they lead.
Steffen leads the financial modelling and analysis teams for benefitRFP, and is considered one of the industry’s most accomplished quantitative minds.
His prior experience includes the role of Regional Director for the Guardian Life Insurance Company, Executive Benefits Consultant for The Phoenix Companies and was in charge of marketing nonqualified executive benefits programs for the Principal Financial Group.
Steffen is a national speaker on executive benefits programs, and also earned the ChFC® designation from the American College. He holds bachelor degrees in Finance and International Business from Iowa State University, where he was a kicker for the Cyclone football team, and the captain of the soccer squad.
Aside from his work in the finance industry, his passion is to find extraordinary moments in remarkable places with remarkable people. A voracious doer and adventure ambassador, he also founded Vintiri – an adventure company and mobile app – that enables people to find their moments as a currency of life. Steffen's hobbies also include travel adventures, playing soccer, mountain biking, snowboarding and enjoying the outdoors. He lives in Alameda, California, along with his adventure wife, Teresa, and son, Xander.
Mike Piatt, CLU | Vice President
A former collegiate basketball coach, Mike brings a wealth of energy and experience to his role of Vice President to benefit RFP. With over twenty years of highly successful consultative planning strategies, he has been very creative in designing non-qualified plans to help his clients grow their companies and protect their estates. Specializing in tax management, cash flow management, and wealth accumulation strategies, his clients appreciate his strategies to help them achieve their goals.

Bryan Kissinger | Commercial Lines Manager
Bryan brings to BD Capital a highly successful career in Commercial Insurance and leadership. With over 20 years in the insurance industry, Bryan’s extensive commercial lines experience and knowledge adds to the depth of resources available to agencies partnering with BD Capital. Having spent time in the sales, service, and management arenas of the retail segment of the insurance industry allows Bryan to provide guidance and input related to streamlining of the workflow processes and procedures of the Commercial Lines teams.
With previous positions with agencies and with national wholesale brokers, Bryan understands the importance and interactions needed to maintain good working relationships between markets and agency personnel. Along with the other members of the BD Capital management team, Bryan works with the owners and personnel of acquired businesses to ease the transition to the BD family of agencies. Bryan has been a key player in assessing the carrier and personnel needs of each agency, and in recruiting new companies and staff to help each entity achieve its fullest potential.
Bryan earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and Marketing from Bowling Green State University.
Dan Sutherin, MBA CPCU CIC CRM | national hub director
Dan Sutherin, MBA CPCU CIC CRM brings 35 years of agency experience to Nations Choice. With deep history in a three generation insurance agency and having started an agency from scratch, Dan has experienced the stresses and the exhilaration of being an agency owner.
With changes occurring in business today, and after several years of dramatic growth in his agencies, Dan decided to join the team at Nations Choice Trusted Advisors. As National Hub Director, Dan will coordinate client opportunities with Nations Choice Trusted Advisors to assure that our clients receive only the highest standard of assistance. It is the goal of Hub operations to guide the development of meaningful client solutions. Solutions that identify and address issues uncovered by our proprietary technology and our rich advisor knowledge base.
Dan graduated from DePauw University, later received his MBA from Cleveland State. His insurance training includes CPCU, CIC, and CRM from Ohio University, Lancaster. He has received the Governors Voluntary Action Commendation from the State of Indiana and the Bernard Raimer Award for life achievement in community service.
Leah Atyeo | Marketing and Client Services Manager
Leah Atyeo assists benefitRFP to develop and implement marketing strategies and processes. Leah collaborates on the development of the company’s marketing, website content, and presentations. Leah acts as liaison for executive benefits, facilitating client plan DIAGNOSTIC & planBUILDER connections, creating financial models for their plans and routinely reviewing the performance of established plans.
With over 20 years of client relationship management, Leah’s extensive background and thorough focus on individual participant financial needs enables her to properly assist advisors to systematically pinpoint company planning needs while also helping to ensure participants achieve their financial goals.
Leah has extensive training in the executive benefits boardroom-ready MATRIX system, which utilizes the DIAGNOSTIC, planBUILDER, CONCIERGE and LiSPT technologies.
Stephen Campbell | Agency Development Specialist
Stephen Campbell has held a variety of titles and has been involved with various multi-media projects around the midwest for over a decade. Before becoming a part of the BD Capital Team, Stephen worked for several prominent production companies and as a web developer on national and regional projects . His roles included early development and business copy writing as well as content management. He has a BFA from the College-Conservatory of Music. Stephen will be responsible for social media expansion and special projects for BD Capital.
Lori Jirles |Financial Controller
Bringing more than 20 years of experience to the table, Lori Jirles handles BD Capital's accounting and reporting functions. She works closely with agencies to collect and consolidate their financials, assuring a smooth transition during the sales process. Having owned and managed three independent pharmacies, a grocery store, and a commercial real estate rental company, Lori understands small business. In addition, she has done consulting work for restaurants, car dealerships, physicians, and more.
Lori earned her Bachelor’s degree in math and biology from the University of Dayton, where she graduated with honors, and was the founding president of the Iota Pi chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha. She was awarded Business Person of the Year by the Cambridge Area Chamber of Commerce, served as President and Treasurer of the Byesville Board of Trade and Cambridge Country Club and has volunteered as President and Treasurer of several local booster clubs. She is married to her high school sweetheart, Paul, and they enjoy reading, skiing, hiking and traveling the country to visit their four children.
